All the parts that can't be sold!. As in intestines, chicken beaks, and feet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

"There is no fixed specification for hot dog meat, with pork and beef being the most popular ingredients!. Less expensive hot dogs typically contain some pork, but are primarily chicken, due to the low cost and availability of mechanically separated chicken!. Hot dogs are generally regarded as unhealthy insofar as most have high sodium, fat and nitrate content!. In recent years, due to changing dietary preferences in the U!.S!., manufacturers have turned to turkey, chicken, or vegetarian meat substitutes, and have begun lowering salt content!.

In general, if a manufacturer produces two types of hot dog sausages, "wieners" tend to contain pork and are the blander of the two, while "franks" tend to be all beef and more-strongly seasoned!. This is particularly true of Oscar Mayer products!."Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hi,

The variations in content are vast & wide!.
You could be eating minced prime beef or pork, or a compacted sludge of bits of left-over animal with loads of fat & filling!.

The ones on street corners in NY have never done me any harm, but I load them up with boiled onion, mustard & ketchup!.
The meat side of things is suspect, though!.

I do trust the tinned ones from a well known manufacturer, as you can see on the tin that they are "80% pork, 10% beef, etc"

But from which part of the animal !?

The same can well be said of other convenience foods!.

I asked KFC if their chickens were free-range!.
Er, no!.

I asked McD where this 100% beef came from!.
Er, no idea

I have yet to hear of a fatality due to eating a hot-dog, so I guess we take our chances !

You may not want to know!. I never buy hotdogs, but the disgusting factor is lessened when it's slightly burned on someone elses grill (free of course) and I numb my mind to the fact that they are comprised of "everything but the kitchen sink" relative to pig and cow parts!. Some brands, as already said here, are superior to others, but it's mostly various and sundry animal "parts!."Www@FoodAQ@Com

In the U!.S!., what goes into hot dogs and how they are labeled are spelled out:
http://www!.fsis!.usda!.gov/Factsheets/Hot_!.!.!.

Check the labeling and ingredients!. If they are labeled just as "frankfurters" or "wieners", etc!. then it should be made from skeletal muscle meat and no organs!.

If the packaging mentions anything about by-products or variety meats, then it may contain organ meat (heart, kidney, etc!.) but it must be named in the ingredients!.

But this is for federally regulated product!. If your local store makes their own and doesn't ship any out of that state, state regulations apply - which might be different!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

some are made of chicken and pork, and some are made of beef (cow) and some are made from turkey, just take a look a the front of the package it usually says whether they are made of beef, turkey, or chicken/pork!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Very finely minced meat of less marketable parts of the animal (beef or pork, usually - says on the packet)!.
Plus flour and spices - and different additives, aroma and preservatives!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Depends on what brand, but various parts of a cow!. Better hot dogs use just the good parts!. Hebrew National's are amazing because they are kosher and oh so good!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

She's right, you don't want to know!. It's usually the parts that are left over that no one wants to eat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
