Basic cooking Cooking classes: Should they be mandatory in Jr. high?!

Question: Basic cooking Cooking classes: Should they be mandatory in Jr!. high!?
for boys and girlsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Yes!!! I believe if the kids learned sooner about nutrition and preparing simple meals, the would have a better understanding
of nutrition and weight control!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are two routes you can take in high school!. You can take the honors classes or you can take the vocational classes, not both, since they cause conflict in the scheduling!. Otherwise, that would be a pretty good idea!. Most gals of my generation and later can't cook anything!. (I'm lucky: Cooking is a hobby of mine!.) I often wonder if our population would be healthier if they cooked fresh food rather than relying on restaurants and TV dinners for sustenance!. I think the results could only be positive - as long as the kids can fit it into their rigorous schedule!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Absolutely! Home Economics should be added as core for junior high!. We used to encourage boys to learn all the basics - cooking, cleaning, laundry, basic sewing, etc!. Now we find hardly any girls know about these things!. All kids should be taught these basics, as academics will take them so far, but if they are unable to perform simple self preserving tasks, they will not function successfully in society!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, I don't think so!. I honestly think that basic cooking skills should be the parents responsiblty, not the kids!. School is for academics, this is a basic home training thing that parents should be taking care of!.

Now basic nutrition, that's a different story, and yes, I think that should be taught early in schools!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no, i want to take baking classes in my high school but we don't have any!. but ya, there is no reason they should make them mandatory for u!. U know when i was in Jr!. High, we had to take library class with this bitter old woman who had gotten fired from our school years before for verbally abusing one of my friends!. so ya, i wasn't very happy when i found out our old computer teacher would now be our librarian and we would have to check out a book every week and not talk in order to eat lunch!. so basically, u r right there is no reason u should have to take that class if u don't want to!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it should be strongly suggested by a counselor!. I never took it because it was all cake-baking!. My husband took it in jr!. high and learned everything from safe food handling to weights and measures to cooking!. He went on to culinary arts in college!. If my home ec would have actually taught *cooking* I would have taken it!. Instead I found myself unable to cook at 19!. I think it would be a very wise idea for all kids to take it, but not forced to!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think they should be offered, but not mandatory!. I wish I had a cooking class, because when I go to college, or get into my first apartment, I don't want to eat ramen noodles or Chinese takeout all the time!.
Thankfully, I do know how to cook, but it would still be nice to be able to take a class in it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes,as should woodshop for girls!.One should have a broad horizon of options, not be pigeonholed!. I've made a living of over 20 yrs!. cooking, baking, etc!.,but can still cut a lawn and fix a car!.
P!.S!.(A man who can cook is a real help when it comes to the lady's,ie!.-I snuck out early one morning and brought Bacon,Eggs,Waffles,Fresh O!.J!.,And Fresh Flowers to a young lady in bed!.And no,not an apology, just kindness!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

i think that they should be taught during Art for maybe a week or 2 or perhaps in the Family Studies unit in english [well at least they did at my school]!. I leared how to make muffins!! I don't think i should be a whole class, because they don't even offer home ec!. at high schools here [in Ontario] anymoreWww@FoodAQ@Com

I think that learning to cook in school should be mandatory in
Jr!. High because there's a lot of children that wouldn't know
how to cook otherwise and if their parents weren't there to
teach them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't think it should be mandatory but they should at least have them as electives in case someone would like to learn about cooking!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes i think so
also
car machanics
!.!.!.like how to fix a flat tire
because how Are girls going to know how to do that
boy will not know how to cook a decient meal eitherWww@FoodAQ@Com

YEAH, you get to get make food in school!. I had it in Jr!. high and i always love eating it when i was finished!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i believe it should be in high school but not jr high because kids that young dont care, they are just on the go!. but high schoolers will remember for when they go to college i think!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sure!. I don't think kids need to learn how to make gourmet cuisine, but they should at least learn the basics, like how to roast meat, toss a salad, fry eggs etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

NO!. What a waste of tax dollars! Having cooking in school is a very old fashioned notion, and one we need to rethink!. The money would be best spent elsewhere!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Not Junior High, but definitly High School!.
Alot of house fires are caused because people trying to cook!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think high schools or junior high schools should be required to offer them, but only as an elective class!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes as you never know when something catastrophic will happen and there are so many people now who would die from starvation and food poisoning because they didnt know how to cookWww@FoodAQ@Com

no!.!.!.most people should already know how to cook by thenWww@FoodAQ@Com

No!. it should be a club or an option because many kids are in band or chorus right now and the school Bord could get angry if parents complainWww@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, I think home economics in general would be use for everyone!. Make sure to include learning to budget money!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No!. But I think that cooking and proper taking care of children should be electives in high school!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it should b an option!. some kids dont like cooking, and some do, but its their choice to cook later on in life or nottWww@FoodAQ@Com

I think that should at least be an option!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

naaa but theyre optionalWww@FoodAQ@Com

No but it would be good to have them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no, people can learn to cook outside of the classroom, ie at home!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i love cooking and am in jr!. high; i would love it!Www@FoodAQ@Com

NopeWww@FoodAQ@Com

yes every one should learn how to cook so they can take care of them selvesWww@FoodAQ@Com
