How does corn in fields keep from poping on hot days?!
Answers:
There are some crazy answers on this one! The first one is way off base!. Corn is left on the stalk to dry unless it is to be harvested as sweet corn to be eaten fresh or canned!. Trust me, I let my corn dry for a LONG time while it is still on the stalk, and is dead as a doornail!.
To agree with one, the simple reason is that it doesn't get hot enough!. That is the one and only reason it does not pop in the field!.
The following taken from some other answers lead me to believe people should not be attempting to answer questions they don't know they answer to!.
For example:
Popcorn is harvested AFTER it has dried in the field, AFTER the stalks have died and no longer provide moisture!.
Popcorn does NOT require oil to pop (hot air popper is an example)!. Lastly, Popcorn does NOT come from seeds before they grow!. If they didn't grow, how would they become seeds!?!?
The correct answer is one you have gotten already!. It doesn't get hot enough, and that's it!.!.!.nothing more!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Only severely dried corn with the help of oil can be made into popcorn!. (oil isn't necessarily needed, but no one uses dry popping anymore)
If you were to just leave a corn on the cob on the sidewalk on a 100 degree day, it would likely just sit there for days, until birds picked it clean!. You need very high temperatures to actually pop the dry kernels!.
And some corn can't be made into popcorn anyways!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

becuase the seeds are to make the actual corn kernals
like the one you get in the can at the store and they need heat to grow!.
popcorn uses the kernals before they grow like the ones in the cans, and it has to be in a confined enviroment(microwave) with the right amount of heat directly at it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it's not hot enough - oh and when you pop popcorn it has to be the correct temperature - not hot enough and the corn doesn't pop at all (and it's basically ruined) and too hot some other thing happens!. check out making popcorn!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
The corn on the stalk has constant moisture, also the temperature for popping the corn is rarely met to a degree or concentration where the corn would be popping anyways!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
it's not hot enough and besides the corn will dry up before it pops!.!.!.(it needs OIL and HEAT to pop!.!.) and not all corn will pop!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
If the corn were to pop that means that the temperature is about 300 degrees and the fields would be on fire!!!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Ha, it'll never be hot enough (no oil) or dry enough (it's still alive!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com
when the corns on the stalk its still alive, its not dry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I!.!.!.!. I don't know!.!.!.!. never thought about it before!.!.!.
Now I'm going to have to try that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
