We cooked a whole ham!. We do this regularly!. Only this time instead of the ham coming out nice and pink with good flavor our ham came out grayish and tasting just like cooked pork chops!. Are there differnt types of whole hams!. Do we need to watch what kind we buy!?!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
yes there are two types of hams one being the fresh ham which is as says it;s fresh and never cooked or smoked/ cooked which is cooked but needs to be warmed up!.
from what you say you bought a fresh ham and those are just like pork chops only in a different form and bring grey and tasting like pork chops is how they would taste!.
they are fine to eat and most people buy them during holiday times as they are not your everyday eating ham!.
the fresh ham would have been displayed in the pork section of the meat dept!. as they are fresh and that's where they are kept!. if you wanted a smoked ( slightly smoked ) cooked ham those would be displayed with the ham slices and other hams halves and whole!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There's many different types of whole ham's and some are better then others!.
Nueskes is considered the top of the line but their very expensive( along with alot of other good brands)!.
http://www!.nueskes!.com/
also there are "smoked hams, boiled hams", cured hams"
( and in your case it may have been overly cooked or smoked at the plant)!.
What brand was it!?
Do you still have the label!?
Yes, there are different cuts and some are just pressed from ham parts( which are good) but not as good as the real hams( leg only)!. There are also shoulder hams!.
Ok, the price sort of tells you that it may have been a pressed ham!. No big deal of course except that you didn't get what you wanted!.
A small leg( only) high quality ham would have been 3 to 4 times the price!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
