Just curious on your proven methods!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
According to my wise friend, you look for 3 things:

a large whitish patch on one side indicating it ripened on the ground

a whithered brown stalk

a nice resounding bell tone when you thump it with your finger!.

Hope it helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I stick to the seeded variety and get one on the smaller side that is a more darker green with a lighter patch (but not completely white, you still want to see the watermelon pattern in the light spot)!.
I've never been able to consistently pick good ones using the "thump" , but I know some people that swear by it!. I do know you don't want it to sound too hollow!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Press down firmly, like if you were giving the melon a cpr heart massage!. When the melons rind flexes, just a tiny bit, you should hear a light crunching sound inside!. If it doesn't crunch it's either not ripe or so ripe that it's already turning to mush!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

-Weight: the heavier the better!. This means that there are lots of juice in this melon which generally means a good ripe one!.

-Don't get the greenist ones!. Look for that patch of yellow on it!. Those melons with the yellow patch tend to be sweeter!.
