What are the pros and cons to working in a real kitchen!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
It takes a lot of dedication, hard work, some working knowledge of cooking, the ability to LISTEN AND FOLLOW directions!.!.!.!.!.!.!.And culinary school, in my best opinion, is like military boot camp (I was THERE, too!!) The chefs try and "weed out" those that can't cut the yelling and intensity!.!.!.!.!.If you think being a chef is a sham job, you're definately looking at the wrong vocation!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Long hours on your feet, hovering over hot stoves/ovens/boiling water, cuts, burns!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.but would I do it again!?!?!? IN A HEARTBEAT!!!

I'm not a formally trained chef, like Christopher, but I have worked as head chef in both a Mexican style restaurant and a New Mexico road house type steak house and now I still do the occasional corporate dinner party for several of my friends and associates companies!.
Just like cooking at home, slaving over a hot stove, the kitchen is hot, your feet get worn out from long hours on a tile covered concrete floor, you have the occasional diner who is not satisfied with anything, no matter how perfectly it is prepared!.
When done properly, every meal is a work of art!. From the entree, side dishes, desserts and drinks, all the way down to the simple garnish or decorations that you add for your own special touch, even the manner in which things are arranged and presented on the plate!. Every plate is an experiment, a learning experience, a search for the ultimate dish!. Always trying to change, improve, and impress!.
I'm an artist and a musician and I use all this inner creativity in presenting the ultimate meal to my diners!. I love cooking, but cooking for a crowd, or for people I've never cooked for before is a fantastic experience!.
EDIT: The toughest part, for me, is the planning!. You have to create a meal in your head, prepare a grocery list, do the shopping for meats, veggies, etc, everything except the staples, spices, etc, that you keep on hand!. So basically, you have to create each meal in your head before you even approach the kitchen!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well I am not officially a chef a member of my family is and I have worked with him, the cons were butchering animals, and working most days of the week
pros: you have lots of options for your career like what type of food, location, what meals, the theme of your restaurant, you control it, and it's nice to make people feel good!!!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

When I was learning and working at the same time, it was amazing, you had battles everyday and the feeling when you produce a beautiful dish and head chef praises you is wonderful, but it comes with a price!. I've never worked in such a manipulative environment with mentally vicious people!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
It is very fun! You have to like to cook though!. It gets really hot in the summer months!. Depends on if you are a chef or a line cook!. If you are just a line cook like at a restaurant chain you have to also clean up after the end of the night and that sucks!. If you are a REAL chef you just cook and prepare food!. I was a chef for years, but got tired of it so I switched careers!. Girls love a guy that knows how to cook so that is also a plus!. Overall though I enjoyed and still enjoy cooking to this day!. It's a good feeling make a great dish and getting compliments on it!. If you work in a real kitchen you have to be alert because there are tons of things going on at once and a lot of people talking/yelling back and forth so you will have to be able to work with a lot of things going on around you!. It is also very stressful esp!. during the dinner rush so you will need to keep your cool!. also if you don't drink or smoke cigarettes when you become a chef you probably will!. Best bet to give you an idea!. Literally, watch Hells Kitchen!.!.!. It is pretty much just like that just not all the cussing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Very stressful!!! And if you're a woman in a kitchen full of men, even more!.
I honestly can't think of a pro of being a chef, but I could make a list of all the cons the size of the London to Penzance line, lol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
