Answers:
Things get freezer burned because ice crystals get forced out of the frozen product!. "Frost-free" freezers actually work in cycles to freeze and thaw the freezer surfaces!. This helps to keep frost from forming on the walls and door of the freezer, but speeds the process of "burning" your food!. As your food thaws a little on the surface, then freezes again, ice crystals form and get pushed out of your meat or ice cream, dehydrating them and making them look "burned"!. The food doesn't actually get cooked, but it gets frost-bitten and will be tough!.

Deep-freezers tend to have much lower temperatures than normal freezers and do not have a thaw cycle so they can keep food for a very, very long time, as the surface ice forms only once!. I have had large joints of meat last a few years in a deep freeze with no ill effects!.

If food gets freezer-burned, just cut the affected portion away before cooking or consuming!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

things that are open to air in the freezer will get the burn!. It will have the same storage life but the texture and the taset of the item will go awayWww@FoodAQ@Com

Freezer burn comes from air getting trapped in packages!.
Using a vacuum packer eliminates most freezer burn!.
Meats generally keep for 6 months, other stuff longer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

because somehow the air is getting to it!.
freezing doesnt always make things last longer!.!.!.once you see the meat itself turing color or getting ice crystals on it it has to be tossedWww@FoodAQ@Com

Depends on how well wrapped they are, but meat I wouldn't eat after 6 months, veggies, 1 year!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
