Does a sharpening steel ever need to be replaced? If so, how often .?!

Question: Does a sharpening steel ever need to be replaced!? If so, how often !.!?
I was just wondering if a sharpening steel ever needs to be replaced!? I have a HENCKELS GOURMET SET that came with a steel in the block!. I was curious to know if the steel ever needs replacing or will it pretty much last indefinitely!? I have a mechanical sharpener that I use to sharpen my knives!. I use the steel afterward to hone the edge and also to maintain the edge between sharpenings!. Just wondering about this!.Obviously, if I find that my knives get dull sooner ,that would be an indication, but aside from this ,what else would indicate when it's time to replace!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I have used Henckels for many years and the steel won't have to be replaced!. However, I surely do not recommend using a mechanical sharpener for your knives as they can cut into the steel!. Much better to pick up a whet stone at your local hardware!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most likely you'll never have to replace the steel!. However, if your steel becomes slippery smooth than it's lost the ability to hone the edge!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
