Is the use of an egg cup unusual in America?!
Answers:
My in-laws came from the U!.K!. and were surprised that we did not have egg cups in our house!. When I was a child (in the U!.S!.) my mom had painted one in her ceramics class, so they've certainly been around!. You can still get them at shops!. She used to make us soft-boiled eggs when we were ill but scrambled the rest of the time (plus when we learned to cook, it was easier for us to cook scrambled than to time it right)!. Now, even "egg timers" (with the sand) are mostly used for board games like Boggle!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
You can find egg cups in the US, but the reason you probably don't see em in many homes is that ppl in the US tend to not eat as many soft boiled eggs!. In Germany, I noticed that soft boiled eggs are a lot more common and when I ordered fried eggs, the waiter gave me a funny look!. I get the feeling that fried eggs are more common in Britain and the US!. If you do eat a lot of soft boiled eggs, egg cups are a nicer way to serve em!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I think they are much less common than they used to be!. We used to eat 3-minute eggs that were still runny, and they'd be served in an egg cup!. I think today most Americans are afraid of eggs that are not completely cooked, because there have been outbreaks of salmonella!. And we eat less eggs than we used to because we're worried about cholesterol!.
When I was a kid I used to see eggs served in egg cups everywhere!. We didn't do them that way at home but I saw them in restaurants, friends' houses, and in movies and TV shows!. Today you just don't see them so much!.
And I think another part of it is that we don't sit down to eat breakfast anymore!. We don't eat eggs/bacon/sausage/potatoes for breakfast except on Sundays and special occasions!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
