Hi,
most of it is basically the same with a few variations, unless you are in a restaurant - then the menu will have more varied items, and a description!.
tortillas in some form - corn or flour meal pounded into a disc and either hard or soft (fried or uncooked or steamed)
filled with some sort of goodness, flavored beef, chicken, or pork!. sometimes mashed beans (frijoles - refried beans), and some cheese - cheddar, jack, etc!.!.!.
the above would encompass things like:
tacos - hard or soft tortilla folded in half and filled
fajitas - soft flour tortilla filled and rolled up
burritos - soft flour tortilla filled and rolled up
not sure what the difference is between a fajita and a burrito
quesadillas - different everywhere you go, tortillas layered with fillings, baked or steamed
enchiladas - tortilla filled, topped with a zingy sauce and cheese, baked
chimichangas - basically a fried burrito
etc!.!.!. all basically the same - minor differences, really, and equally good!. some are hard, some soft, some fried, some baked!.
they may also have lettuce, tomatoes (when salmonella isn't rampant), salsa - spicy sauce of tomatoes, garlic, jalapenos, onions, etc!.!.!. no salsa is exactly the same!.
guacamole is avocado with some seasonings and stuff mashed into a creamy goodness, a topping or dip!.
may have sour cream for the same purpose as the guacamole!.
cilantro may be prevalent, a parsley like herb with a bit more zing and pronounced flavor!.
those are perhaps your basic foods!. you should like them all, if you like tasty food!. some places put potatoes in the meat!.
usually has a side of rice - tasty, and frijoles/refried beans!.
mexican varies across the country, and i'm sure within CA as well!.
personally, i prefer corn tortillas, i love enchiladas, chimichangas, tacos, and quesadillas!. the soft flour tortillas don't do much for me!.
you will have a choice of meats and fillings!.
there is a lot more to mexican food than what i listed but i figured you were going to stands - or places that didn't have menus with descriptions and thought these would be likely items offered!.
i say just start at the top of the menu and work your way down!.
enjoy!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Since you're new to Mexican food ask for the chili on the side until you know about the heat!. You might try the combination plate to get a little of each item!. My favorite is the green chili chicken enchilada!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Don't eat carnitas if you don't like pork!. If you like steak and veggies, order fajitas!. If you like cheese, get an enchilada!. If you order through your car window, it's not authentic Mexican food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
