So, I'm sitting here munching down on a tomato!??!
I just stopped by the local farmers market and bought a couple things, (peaches, melons, and tomatoes) I know there is a big scare out there right now about the tomatoes!. Do you think they will be okay!? The lady said just to wash them really well, and they aren't harmful because they are locally grown!. So, if I get sick I guess I get sick, but they should be okay right!!!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

They, and you, will be fine - it is only commercially grown tomatoes from some 17 different states that are the problem!. Locally grown ones and ones still on the vine are safe to eat!.
From the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Extention Web Site:
The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about a salmonella outbreak in certain types of tomatoes!. Consumers should not consume raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes unless they have been grown in certain regions of the country!. The FDA outlines those regions on there website along with pictures of the tomatoes that are at risk!.

If you think you have contaminated tomatoes, please throw them out or cook them!. The tomatoes are safe to eat if cooked to 145 degrees for 15 seconds!.
The following types of tomatoes are NOT associated with the outbreak and are safe to eat:

tomatoes sold with the vine still attached

The World News said that the salmonella is getting INTO the tomatoes too, when it's picked or packed for shipping or cut, so just washing them isn't going to help!. Round tomatoes & Roma tomatoes are the culprits - cherry & grape tomatoes are fine!. Florida & California were just released to start shipping their tomatoes again !.!.!.!.!.!.other than that, you're on your own with the one you're eatingWww@FoodAQ@Com
yes it is okay!. just wash the tomato really well!. best to cook it so all the germs can die but if you eat it raw it isnt a problem if you catch a disease go to your doctor really quick!. :DWww@FoodAQ@Com
