You didn't say where 'here' was but your Avatar reads 'New Aussie' so I am thinking you are in Australia!. Maybe it costs more because they have to ship the wheat farther to have it processed into flour and then bread in Australia than they do in Ireland!. With the cost of a barrel of oil as high as it is and Australia being so much larger than Ireland, it probably costs more for the shipping of the raw ingredients!. Just a guess!.
Yesterday I paid $3!.69 for a loaf of Arnold's 100% ground whole wheat bread at my local Shaw's Market here in Boston, MA and that is an average price unless you are going for the cheap stuff full of air!.
EDIT: Try keeping your bread in the fridge to help it stay fresher longer!. Make sure that it is wrapped as air tight as possible!. I do that and it works!.
