Im not Japanese (im from Oklahoma), but I love sushi, so I will take a crack at it!.!.!.
Everyone knows that Sushi translates into Raw Fish (or it used to in olden times, Sashimi actually means Raw Fish in present day)!.!.!.but this is not necessarily true to the dish!. It can be served filled with Raw Fish, or Fried, or Prep cooked meat products!. Examples are Raw Salmon, Eel, Tuna, Imitation Crab, Tofu or a veggie mixture or fried (tempura) shrimp, etc!.
The meat is then wrapped in a special grain of rice, a stickier rice called Japonica or suchi rice, that has been mixed with a special vinegar!.
Then it is wrapped in one of several types of seaweed!. The best sushi restaurants give you a choice of which wrap you want!.
After it is wrapped, you can then have that fried whole, if u like!. It can also be wrapped in the seaweed first and then the rice and then dipped into a coating such as sesame seeds!.
You should definately try it!. Im going on a date to a restaurant in midtown Houston that I love this Sunday, Im psyched!!!
(Note:The stuff is delicious, as long as its fresh; after it sets out for a while it can become harmful, so be forewarned!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are many options of sushi!. What you call "black outside" is a seaweed which is rolled against the rice, sometimes there are sesame seeds around the rice!.
If you are curious and want to try sushi, start with the California rolls, they are made with imitation crab which is not raw like the authentic ones!. After that I would go for a tamago sushi (egg sushi) and then start with the raw fish!. You will recognize the shrimp one and you can skip it!.
About the flavor, it's a mix of many flavors!. The soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger will complete the flavors of the rice, seaweed and raw fish!. Give it a try!Www@FoodAQ@Com

lol!.!.!.sushi is basically sliced raw fish!. I'm bettin that makes you a little queasy!.!.!.!.
The black on the outside is probably sea-weed wrapped sushi!. The pink ouside is the sushi itself wrapped around some rice, probably!.
Some sushi treats come with cooked fish and/or no fish!. So, you can go to a sushi restaurant with your friends and not have to eat raw fish, don't worry, just ask the waiter and/or server!.
Btw, sushi is an art in Japan!. The best of them get major bucks for their slicing and artwork!. I'll stick to cooking mine, thank you very much!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
