Since you're a beginner, start with a smaller roast: a 3-rib standing rib roast (prime rib) will work!. The butcher will know what your are talking about!.
Give the meat a quick wipe down with a damp paper towel to get rid of bone dust!. I season mine generously with salt, then add some pepper and a little garlic powder!.
Heat the oven to 400o!. A 13 x 9 metal pan will be fine!.
When the oven comes to temperature, put the roast in, and leave it for about 30 minutes, to get a good seer!.
Then turn the temp down to 320o, and roast the meat until a meat thermometer reads about 135o!.
Take it out , put foil over the top, and let it rest for about 30 minutes!. It will continue cooking for a while, and prime rib tastes better cooked slightly more than medium rare!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am a former chef and have cooked a few prime ribs in my days as a chef, in the 20+ years with hotels all around the world, there is nothing more complicated than what the others have suggested!.
Some may add other seasoning, like garlic, cut in slices and stuffed in slits along the bones, fresh or dried herbs like oregano and rosemary on the fat cap!.
But as prime rib is such a fatty dense meat the spice flavour only is on the outer areas, the cooking method can range from you normal roasting pan to an open roaster on a rack raised out of the fat to allow it to drain off!.
Now if you really want to be exact, then Yorkshire pudding is a side dish to serve, but that can be a bit tricky for a novice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
