"!.!.!.to take on long trips!."!? I hope you're not camping!. You'll need a LONG extension cord to plug it in!.
Anyhow, the ratio is one part long grain rice and 2 parts water!. Add to the cooker, and cover!. Plug it in, and turn it on!. 15 to 17 minutes later, remove the cover and dish up the rice!.

The common ordinary garden variety long grain white rice uses a ratio of 1 part rice and 2 parts water!. You've gotten answers ranging from 1 to 1 up to 1 to 4!. I don't know which the other responses are referring to!. It could be brown rice or wild rice!. Long grain white rice is 1 to 2!. Minute Rice or Uncle Ben's a different story!. They're both converted rice, not long grain!. Try a test batch using the 1 to 2!. It will come out light and fluffy!. I guarantee it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have a 3 cup zojirushi automatic rice cooker: accessories include measuring cup, cord set, with manual!. Your is larger with 5 cups, 3 cups is enough for your family (rice using measuring cup!.
Measure rice accurately:
measure rice using the measuring cup included!.
One level cup of rice is 180cc (Approx!.6 oz )!.
Place the washed rice in the inner pan!.
Place the inner pan in the cooker!.
Make sure the rice is distributed evenly in the inner pan, cover with lid!.
Plug the power supply cord!.
Switch turn off automatically!.
Leave lid closed another 15 minutes, this also helps to prevent rice from sticking to the bottom of the pan!.
For 2 cups of rice measuring in cup= 2 8oz glass of water in pan approx!.
And good luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If it's a Japanese rice cooker, you need to buy a measuring cup that is Japanese (not the same as American measuring cup) Measure the Japanese rice (short grain), wash rice, drain!. Put water in cooker, should have markers to show you how much!. (4 cups rice, fill up water to line 4) Rice will be moist when done!. The next day, you can chop of veggies, saute and use leftover rice to make fried rice!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I think it one cup of water to one cup of rice ,there maybe a level on the inside of the compartment ,you may need to wash the rice first if it is from Japan!.!.
also it may help to let the rice soak for 30 mins in the water ,
if you are making rice for sushi you need extra waterWww@FoodAQ@Com

I love my electric rice cooker!
The method I use to figure out rice to water ratio is --
ex - 1 cup of rice, double it which = 2 cups of water - except take off 1/4 a cup !.!.!.!. So, 1 cup rice to 1 3/4ths cup water!.
also, use butter or olive oil on the bottom to prevent sticking!.
So, you combine your rice & water, I also go ahead and add salt, pepper, and other seasonings, plus a small slice of butter!.
Top on, and turn it on!. Most of the cookers, cook the rice based on the weight of the water in the container, so it always cooks it perfectly!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
