Answers:
I know what you're suggesting, but that depends on the contaminants being on the surface!. After the spinach contamination problem, they know (or suspect) that the e!. coli was absorbed into the vegetable and is contained within!. So you need to cook any suspect vegetables to an appropriate temp in order to kill it, which would be enough to wilt green, leafy vegetables!.

The problem with spinach was in wine-producing areas, where the pressed out remains of the grapes was sold as fertilizer to vegetable producers!. E!. coli is common in animal manure, and keeping them them next to each other or mixing them infected the lot with high amounts of e!. coli, which thrived on the sugar in the grape pressings!. The levels were so high that the bacteria was absorbed into the plants!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know for sure if it would kill the ecoli but the leaves might get a little limp & lose it's crispness!. There is a product on the market you can get to spray your fruits & vegi's that kills bacteria!. It's not harmful & is tasteless!. The actual name escapes me at this moment but it is something like vegi clear or vegi fresh!. I'm not sure!. !.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you would have to heat the vegs to 180 degrees in order to kill e!.colli ,by that time your lettuce would be soup ,check out the ans !.given by luigi ,hes on the right track ,we buy a commercial version of the same stuff and it even passes the local health codes ,and we have the toughest ones in the countryWww@FoodAQ@Com

Luigi is talking about Veggie Wash!. :] Amazing stuff, I'd get ome of that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
