Is the salmonella virus linked to anything else besides tomatoes and peppers?!
Answers:
Salmonella can be found on just about anything! Used to be that raw chicken and eggs were the biggest culprits but now, anything goes!. It's been reported on spinach, bagged salad greens, melons, tomatoes, peppers, herbs just in recent months!.
Contamination can occur so many places!. It can come from the dirt in the fields being fertilized with animal manure and the animals have it!. The water used to water the plants can have it, the people picking and packing the product can have it on their hands! You can contaminate it yourself at home even!. If you use the same cutting board to cut foods that aren't cooked that you used to cut raw chicken on, you can end up with salmonella!.
Best ways to avoid issues; (1) practice good kitchen cleanliness!. Wipe down counters before and after handling foods!. WASH your hands! Wash all fruits and vegetables under cold running water, even if they say they are already washed! Use plastic cutting boards that can go in the dishwasher!. Never use the same cutting board for raw meats and things to be eaten raw without sanitizing!. Sanitizing sprays are available, read and follow the directions!. Or make your own; add a capful of bleach to a pint spray bottle of water and use to wipe down your counters and to spray your utensils and cutting boards with!. Rinse well and air dry!. (2) Examine your practices; dish cloths and sponges just spread the germs around if you don't santize them!. I have multiple sponges and send the ones I've used for the day to the dishwasher!. Or soak in a bit of the bleach and water solution!. (3) Buy local produce in season!. You're helping your local farmers, not funding other countries, it will taste better, be better for you and you're not paying to have it shipped in from Mexico or somewhere!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
