How expired does food have to be before you will throw it away?!

Question: How expired does food have to be before you will throw it away!?
When I moved out on my own like a year ago, my mom and sister bought me a bunch of boxes of things like Hamburger Helper, cake mixes, and other dry, easy to prepare foods!. I just looked through my cupboard, and I realized that at least a third of what is in there is expired by at least a month, some as much a 6 months!. It seems like such a waste to throw it all away, but I definitely don't want to get sick to save a few bucks!. Is it still good since it is all dry and unopened, or should I be faithful to the "best used by" dates!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
if it's been properly stored and no outside conditions have effected it!.!. all of it should be usable by this time!.!.!.

i wouldn't let the stuff go any further!.!. how about open up some of it that you feel like using and check out the ingredients, especially the powdered stuff and see how it is!.

if it smells like it should and it's not all sticky, caked up or hard as a rock!.!.!. time to eat it!.

use by is an estimate only!. storage is important!.!. if no humidity, wetness, climate changes of the drastic!.!.!. over handling!.!. things like that have not ocurred!.!. that junk should be fine!.

but, do consume it shortly!.!. and get new!. you should have enough there for a small get together of friends!.!.!.why not make a weekend of it!?

:D

drop me a line and i'll come by! we can watch dvd's and have cake and hamburger helper!Www@FoodAQ@Com

things that have a "used by" date need to be used by that date and things that have a "best before" date can still be consumed after the date at your discretion, just see if there's colour or texture change and obviously if it smells funny!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Useby is put on for legal reasons-alot of stuff outlives its date!.
If it looks okay, smells okay it should be okay!.!.!.!.!.BUT!.!.!.when in DOUBT-throw it OUT!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
