It's generally thought to come from the Chinese word ketsiap , which roughly translated means the brine of pickled fish or shellfish!.

Some popular early main ingredients included blueberry, anchovy, oyster, lobster, walnut, kidney bean, cucumber, cranberry, lemon, celery and grape!. Mushroom ketchup is still available in some countries, such as the UK!. Banana ketchup is popular in the Philippines!.

You had to specify tomato ketchup or you might end up with walnut ketchup!.
