As a former chef the training a culinary school can give is essential and will get you in the door quicker, as an inexperienced person you will get the worst dirty jobs and you will not advance like someone who had minimal training, plus to become a chef, cooking is one of the the things you need to know, there is kitchen management, ordering and food service management, the money side of the business, hiring staff, and learning other cuisines!.
I have worked with a few people who said training and school is a waste of time, they have been stuck in the same job for 10+ years and have gone no were!!, I would highly recommend if your interested, to talk to a chef, someone with a degree and experience, ask them questions about there training and get the low down before you commit to a career your not sure is right for you, it is long hours, hot conditions, you work holidays and have a varied shifts some times!.
But I worked in 4 different countries over 20+ years as a chef, on 3 continents and had short stints in 2 European kitchens in France and SwedenWww@FoodAQ@Com

I think it's probably the best way to go, especially if you have restaurant experience behind you!. If not, you might want to apply to whatever restaurants are in your area and work your way up through!. If all you want to be is a chef, I think that's great, but get some experience under your belt before you make your final decision!.!.!.working in a kitchen might change your mind!.
