The health dept shut down a Chinese restaurant here because of dogs in a freezer!. The chef was well known and had worked at Trader Vic's before coming to this restaurant, Trader Ku's!. Believe it or not, they let the owners reopen two days later when they convinced the inspector that the dogs were for the personal use of the kitchen staff, that the dogs were scheduled for euthanasia because of overcrowding and that the refrigerator was only used for the employees!.
They made them move everything out and seal the refrigerator!. One of the owners was a big time lawyer with Coca Cola, and he had a lot of pull!. This was an expensive place to eat, and they brought in workers from famous restaurants and from mainland China!. There was a two hour waiting list most of the time, more on the weekends!. Trader Ku's was about a year old They started getting mostly Chinese mainlanders to work there, who would be there 13 hours a day and eat in the employee kitchen!. That is when the trouble started!. It was posted in the Birmingham News, and within 3 months they closed!.!. The once celebrated Peter Ku now runs Ku's, a chinese take out in a strip mall across the highway from where Trader Ku's once operated!. Two other restaurants tried to open in the old location and both failed!. It is now a doc in a box clinic!.
I don't think is worth the trouble or the risk for most owners!.
Sorry to be so long winded, but this reminds me of the song they played on local radio when the "pet fiasco" happened!. It's not about dogs, but you will understand!.
It's called Cat's in the Kettlle at the Peking Moon, done to the tune of Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin!.
