Does Woolworths freeze their apples before sale?!
Answers:
Well, you have the answer there already, apples go mushy when thawed due to their moisture expanding inside the fruit when frozen!. But Woolworths, Australia's largest supermarket chain, have cool rooms, and their suppliers have special cool-rooms which store fruit - apples particularly - in a Nitrogen atmosphere, which, in the absence of oxygen, keeps them as fresh as they can be!. When you get apples six months out of season, you can bet your knickers they have been in Nitrogen for that long!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Yes, definitely!. Apples are only harvested for a couple of months of the year, they are then snap frozen for storage in freezers!. It is not Woolworths who actually does the freezing but the fruit wholesaler!.
Demand for seasonal fruit is year round, and doing this enables people to buy them year round!. The same is done with oranges and lemons!. Often the fruit can be kept in the freezer at the fruit markets for 12 months or more before it is sent out to the shops!.
Bananas are stored green, and then gassed to give them the nice yellow colour and restart the ripening process!.
All of this leads to the fruit looking good when you buy it, but having a short "shelf life" when you get it home!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, they don't freeze them, but their suppliers often keep apples at a specific low temperature (cool stored) so that they can be sold out of season!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I didn't know there were Woolworth's still out there, they used to be a 5 and dime store in the east!

Freezing an apple fresh would make it mushy!. No store would intentionally freeze fruit that way as it would waste them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
