Are tomatoes similar to onions?!

Question: Are tomatoes similar to onions!?
It sounds silly, but I was wondering how close they are to each other (whether they are in the same family) because I noticed that when eating raw tomatoes (by themselves) they produce an aftertaste very similar to the flavor of onions, only more mild!. Anybody know!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
