How to eat a California roll?!
Tomorrow for the first time ever I am trying sushi (California Roll)!. I know that it is to be served with wasabi, pickled ginger, and soy sauce!. This is where I get confused!. Do I put each one of the three on the sushi!? Or try one at a time to see what I like!? Or, do I eat the pickled ginger in between pieces of sushi!? Please help so I don't look like a fool tomorrow trying it!! Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
The wasabi gets mixed in with your soy sauce!. Be careful! Wasabi is a kind of horseradish, and it has a very distinctive burn!. Start with a little, or none at all!.
Dip the sushi into the soy sauce!. Not a lot, just enough for some flavor!.
You use the pickled ginger (called "gari" in Japanese) to cleanse your pallet between different kinds of sushi!. It also also aids digestion!.
If you're afraid of raw fish, then California roll is a good place to start!. If you're feeling adventurous, then Unagi (BBQed Eel) is very tasty!. If your restaurant offers a Spider Roll, then go for that, if you can afford it - Spider roll is only called that because Deep-fried Soft-shell crab resembles a spider!. Both eel and soft-shelled crab are fully cooked!.
If you're adventurous enough to try raw fish, start with Maguro (red tuna) or Hamachi (yellowtail tuna)!. If you want to try something that's a bit of a luxury, Toro is also very tasty, but it can be expensive (fatty underbellly of red tuna - much more rich and higher in fat content)!. Tako (octopus) can be chewy, but it's a favorite of mine!. Tai (red snapper) is also pretty good!. Saba (mackerel) can also be pretty good!.
Avoid Uni (sea urchin roe)!. It can be very difficult to stomach!.
A Chirashi bowl is a wide variety of sashimi (raw fish) served over a bed of rice!. I usually order that from a place I'm not familiar with to get a wide variety of sashimi, and to gauge what is good at a sushi restaurant!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I understand your apprehension!. The first time I ate sushi I had no idea what I was doing, and I ended up eating the whole chunk of wasabi on its own thinking it was a garnish, lol
Since that painful day over a decade ago, I have learned a fair bit!.
This is all you need to know
1) Place a tiny amount of wasabi on the top of a piece of California roll!.
2) Pick up the California roll and dip the bottom in the bowl of soy sauce
3) Eat it in one bite!. Enjoy!
The purpose of the pickled ginger is to refresh the palate after eating one kind of sushi and before proceeding to the next!. If you are only going to east California roll, you don't need to do this between pieces!.
After eating the ginger, it is customary to have a sip of green tea!.
Many people mix their wasabi in soy sauce, but it is not the proper way of eating sushi!. It's kind of like how many people lick their fingers, or rest their elbows on the table etc etc!. Its common, but not proper!.
From a culinary perspective, mixing wasabi together with soy sauce ends up diluting the flavour of each one, and takes away from the unique flavours!.

Pour some soy sauce in the dish that will be provided!.
Dab in a small amount of wasabi!.!.!.it's really hot so only get a tiny amount and mix into your soy sauce!.
Dip on piece of sushi into the soy/wasabi mixture!.
Eat the entire piece in one bite!.
Follow with a small piece of ginger!.
The ginger is usually eaten after eating raw fish!.
California rolls typically contain imitation crab meat so you can skip the ginger if you like as it is an acquired taste!.
You'll do fine if you follow my instructions!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If its like a log one, just hold it upright and squirt a bit of soy sauce onto the rice and let it drip down and soak in!. Then you just bite it :]
You might want to eat it in little mouthfuls, and having a mirror with you will be a lifesaver, cause the seaweed can get in your teeth which is by FAR, the worst thing you can get stuck in your teeth!. Green, slimy, ew!.
Don't use the wasabi if you dont like spicy things!. Its REALLY spicy!. I mean REALLY spicy!. You only need a tiny little dab of wasabi (like the size of half a pea) and BEWARE!. Its HOT!
I wouldnt use all 3 at once!. Try the sushi on its own first, then if you like it try it with soy sauce!. I dont like it with gonger, and if you try it for the first time with ginger or wasabi and you dont liek it, it could put you off sushi for ever! [And you'll be missing out BIG TIME!]!.
If you mean the flat things of sushi, just bite it in half! Hold it horizontally, too!. I would try it with cooked tuna first cause thats really nice :]
If you feel like youre gonna get embarassed eating it, just laugh along!
Good luck!
