Question: Sodium/Salt and Balancing it out in diet!?
Okay, well, we all know that the good ol' U!.S!. of A!. has less than reputable foods for us to feast upon, and most of our 'food' has been so processed and packed with salt, it's near impossible to keep ones intake under the suggested amount!.
So, does anyone know how to get a fair balance in your diet regarding sodium!? I had a bowl of soup for lunch, and realized it contains almost my entire amount of salt for the day!. I have used water pills in the past, hoping this can alleviate the problem, but does anyone have suggestions of herbs or other foods that can eliminate or equalize the salt!? also, what happens if I have too much salt on a day to day!? Nothing's going to happen if you eat too much salt in a day!. It's a cumulative thing!. Of course you can eat salads and dress them with oil and vinegar to avoid salt!. At home you can use other herbs and spices instead of salt!. Mrs!. Dash is a popular substitute!. So is the misunderstood MSG (there's more of it in an apple or a potato than in an average Chinese dish)!. Once you ingest it, there's not much you can do about it, but again, the occasional salt splurge won't hurt as long as you keep it to a minimum in your diet in general!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Unfortunately people always want an easy route, pill, herb, drink!. All you really need to do is look at the label!. Here in the good ol' US of A every consumable item has to have nutrition and ingredients listed on the label!. You want to try and stay below 10% 5 being around ideal 0% being the best!. I don't like salt so I think it's easier for me, but like you said you ate the soup then realized it had all the sodium in it!. Read first eat secondWww@FoodAQ@Com

Most of processed food is like that!. Simply avoid it!. Buy more whole foods like whole grains, veggies, fruit, beans etc!. Season with strong flavors like garlic, chili powder etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You're right!. Processed foods are packed with sodium, and it's easy to get a day's worth in one meal!.

The only thing you can do to reduce your sodium intake is to make all of your meals from scratch!. I do it all the time!. It takes a little more time than opening a can of soup, but cooking everything yourself can be really satisfying because you know everything that's in your food!. also, bread has quite a bit of sodium in it so if you want to lower your intake you should limit your bread!. Butter, margarine, and peanut butter are also pretty high in sodium!.

If you have high blood pressure, you should definitely limit your sodium intake, but if you have normal or low blood pressure, I think its fine to get a little more than the recommended amount!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

make your own food, or if you really want to/have to canned stuff, just look for stuff that is low or no sodium!. also look out for MSG or monosodium glutamate, this may mean taking a longer look at labels while shopping but its worth it!.

When you are cooking, add a little bit of salt, and then try adding a bit of lemon or lime juice!. This helps to make all the flavors seem bigger and basically does what salt does, but without the sodium!. also when you are cooking think about what you are adding, for example, if you cook something with ham, you probably wont need a lot of salt, since ham is already salty

as long as you dont have any health conditions, you shouldnt have to worry too too much about the level of salt you intake!. Just make sure that you drink a lot of water, and not ice teas, bottled drinks, etc!. I mean if you want to drink green tea, make it yourself!. The bottled stuff has sugars, salts, so much unneeded stuff, the same goes for vitamen waters!. Just drink water and if you want vitamens, take a multi vitamen!Www@FoodAQ@Com
