Are melamine plates safe?!

Question: Are melamine plates safe!?
Don't know if this is a stupid question, but after hearing on the news about milk in China being contaminated with Melamine, I thought about it!.

I have a lot of melamine plates, cups etc!.
What's the difference between industrial melamine & melamine used to make plates, etc!?
Are they safe to eat from!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Melamine is a white crystalline compound, C3H6N6, used in making melamine resins and for tanning leather!. Melamine is a trimer (polymer) of cyanamide, H2NC[tbond]N, and is synthesized from calcium carbide!. It condenses with formaldehyde to give a thermosetting resin!. Melamine resins have many uses, including the manufacture of plastic dishes under the trade name Melmac!.

The melamine incident in baby food in China was due to powdered melanine being added to raw milk to give a falsely high protein reading as milk in China is tested for protein content to show it hasn't been watered down (in Europe we check for watering using freezing point depression to see if water has been added so we should pick it up any water adulteration despite other additions)!. My understanding is that this powdered melamine has caused many babies to develop kidney stones & some have died!. Melamine is formed with heat & this process during manufacture should render it resistant to corrosion & other damage!.!.!.!. as long as you're not planning on eating the plates themselves you should be ok!.!.!.!.!. don't worry about your kitchen items - after all you wouldn't eat powdered pottery/pyrex or glass & these are safe materials to eat off!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm sure it is, as it's gone through a process!. We have the plates made from melamine as well!. They're the best, as they don't break after crashing to the floor a thousand times!.I'm sure they would've pulled it from the market if it wasn't!.
Although, research in later years might say that you weren't supposed to put hot food on it etc!. etc!., you know how it goes, new research coming out with all sorts these days!.
i think the melamine incident in China is due the use of pure, untreated melamine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They are okay to eat off of but you cant put them in the dishwasher or the microwave, so what's the point!. Use Corelle dishes for daily use, they are cheap, safe and practical!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I trust you're not powdering up the plates & consuming them!?
If not, you're pretty safe!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
