The other suggestions about prying the lid with a knife works!.
However, it would have been safer if you wrap the circumference of the lid with rubber (thick rubber band or 1/2 to 1 inch width of discarded tire interior tube) then try to twist the cover open!. The source of the problem with opening a jar with a tin lid is lack of friction!.
A vacuum hermetically-sealed bottle is locked in place by the "sucked" air inside the bottle!. Hence prying the lid a little to let a little air in would work!. Using rubber will increase the traction with your hands and therefore would facilitate easier twisting of the cap!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I get this a lot in the restaurant, drives me crazy!!!
I wouldn't go messing about with knives, apart from the fact that it's dangerous, it's also really bad for the knife!.
I take the bottle and wack the side of the lid against a wall!. The jolt breaks the vacume created inside the bottle and you can then open it easily!.
Works every time!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hitting the lid with a knife is both stupid and dangerous, although it will work!. The best way to do it is to take the jar firmly in your hand and bring the side of the lid down on to a heavy surface with a swift hard tap!. if you do it correctly you'll here a 'pop' and the vacuum will be broken!. You can then open the jar very easilyWww@FoodAQ@Com
Run hot water over the lid to expand it, then put a cloth over the lid!. It should be possible to unscrew it!. You can buy rubber discs which can also be used to open awkward jars!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Yup whack it with the dull side of a heavy knife right on the edge top edge where the flat bit becomes the side!.
It deforms the lid and breaks the vacuum!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Slip a knife to under the rim at one point and gently twist so the rim moves outward!. Then choose another point and do it again!. Keep going round till the lid is loose!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
Turn the jar upside down and tap it on the kitchen floor!. It will loosen the seal!. I have weak wrists and this is the only way I can open jars!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
tap the side of the jar sharply on the worktop - this helps to release the airlock and makes opening the jar much easierWww@FoodAQ@Com
Large pliers should open it easily !?Www@FoodAQ@Com
bang the edge of the lid very hard with the dull side of a knifeWww@FoodAQ@Com
Tip jar upside down and thunk, (hit hard) the bottom of the jar three times! Www@FoodAQ@Com
