What exactly is a "Refried bean? " Like why do they have to fry it twice?!
Answers:
A very good question!. As the head chef of La Puerta restaurante in Matamoroos, Mx!. I have often been asked that very question!.
The reason for the name "refried" is based upon the texture of the exterior of the bean!. The term reef is often associated with reducing the size of the sail on a ship!.!.!.making it smaller by tying it or rolling it up!.!.!.The beans in Mexico are grown in a very arid country!. They don't become big and juicy as Anglo beans and often will even begin to dry while still on the vine!. A combination of reef (to roll) and dried!.!.!.eventually was shortened to "refried"
Glad to serve!.!.!.mucho gustoWww@FoodAQ@Com

I always wondered that too but I knew it's possible to have refried beans that are fat free!.!.!.but fried anything is not fat free!. So how does this work!? It must be a non-accurate word that probably didn't translate well from Spanish!.
Anyway, if you want your beans to be healthier, you can just buy the fat free variety in a can, or you can just boil up a pot of your fav kind of beans, such as black, or pinto or a mix of any kind at all, using garlic and onion and green chilis and cumin and whatever else!.!.!.then whip them up in the food processor with some of the juice or some beef or chicken stock!. You can freeze quite a large batch by scooping them into baggies and freezing them flat!. Once or twice a year might keep you in homemade refried beans for pennies a bag and they come back beautifully from the freezer, and taste really really good!.
Incidently this would work with garbanzos, making hummus too!.
Enjoy!

You're taking the term too literally!.
The beans are first softened either by soaking overnight or boiling them!.
They are then cooked once, (excluding the option of boiling them first to soften them), in a sauteed mixture of onions, garlic, peppers, seasonings, etc!.
So in fact, they aren't even fried once, they're sauteed!.
