Answers:
You got an overripe piece!.
Did the orange rind feel slightly slimy or have white mold on it!?
Is it safe to eat!?
YES!.
Do some people prefer it that way!?
YES
Is it desirable in that particular cheese!?
NO!.

Most people( in America anyway) prefer if fresh!. Bright orange rind, no whitening and with an American style Muenster cheese smell( mild)!.
However, what's giving off the the "Foot" liker odor is the rind and not the actual cheese itself!.
If there is any green mold in the cheese, return it, it's gone!.
Chaumes should have a bright orange rind with no whitening!.
Then always look at the cheese!. The color should be an even straw color with no variance!.
