They are excellent, essentially on the low setting, it generates the same heat as a light bulb!. This means, you could perhaps seal a chicken on both sides in a pan, put it in the pot on your slow cooker, add some stock, leeks, carrots, onions etc, and make poulet au pot whilst you are out all day, coming back to a delicious meal!.
I would not advise it for quicker cooking vegetables, such as peppers in curries and such like, as they do go a little odd at times!. However, you can make curry, with cauliflower, chicken, onions, mushrooms and then add your curry mixture, such as ginger, curry powder or leaves, cornflour etc, and come back to a lovely smell!.
You can make minestrone soup as well, as it is very slow cooking!.
I really like them!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Oh yes I would say get one!. I used to have a small one, but upgraded to a bigger one as we use it so often!. Basically any meal that can be cooked in a casserole dish or in a saucepan in gravy or a sauce or any one pot meals can go in slow cookers!. I put mine on first thing in the morning and depending on what it is, if it's on low it would be ready by teatime or on high it maybe ready by lunchtime!. You can cook stews, casseroles, anything in a sauce such as bolognaise or soups, you can pot roast chickens and joints of meat, you can even make jam in them!.
I would recommend getting a good slow cooker book for ideas, but you can find loads of recipes on the internet!.
As for timings, if I were making a beef stew/casserole I would turn it on about 7am on high and it would be ready for 12 noon!. On the other hand I may put it on low at 7 or 8 am and it would be ready for 4 or 5 pm!. The great thing about slowcookers is it is very hard to overcook food in them!. If you get home an hour later than planned the meal will still be great!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
