It's probably all a big con, how do we really know it's gm free!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
The only con here is the idea of fresh fruit and veg, the food stuff is only harvested once a year!. During the year when it is not in the supermarkets or in the indoor/outdoor Small markets the food is stored in warehouses!. Take cabbage as an example, when first pulled from the ground a cabbage is as big as a Human head!. As the weeks go by the leaves on the outside rot so people are employed to remove the rotting leaves!. Thus the cabbage gets smaller and smaller!. There is nothing wrong with the food, the inside leaves of the cabbage is still good to eat!. The vegetables you buy at the small indoor/outdoor markets comes from the same batch!. The difference is the supermarkets tell the large farmers what shape and size they want the fruit and vegetable to be!. Which why you never see a bent carrot in a supermarket!.
I did a summer job working at a huge farm in March (East Anglia) which is why I know what happens!. There is more to it than I have mentioned here, but that would take a chapter of a book or a one/two hour documentary on TV to give a more thorough explanation!.
Other than adhering to the fussy nature of the supermarkets and the exception to peas, there is no processing of fruit and vegetables!. Peas are dyed green, because some peas are yellow and people think yellow peas are rotten!. Nothing wrong with yellow peas they're just not green, try convincing some people that though!. No hope!.

Sounds like a big Con
Farm produce is still the same as that which is on the Supermarket shelves!.
Supermarkets either buy direct from the Farm or through distributors/wholesalers who either buy direct from the farm or from the markets where the farm produce is also sold!.
Don't forget a lot of the big Supermarkets also have imported produce on their shelves, in Australia they must show Country of Origin by law!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The reason farm produce is packed as it is, is because of health and safety laws, food hygiene regs etc!. It's knowing how to source your food which will give you the freshest produce, milk for example can be a week old before you buy it in supermarkets, its been homogenised so the fat molecules are dispersed throughout the milk so making it harder to know if it is turning sour!. Eggs are the same, by the time they've been collected from the farm, graded, packed and distributed they are not as farm fresh as some supermarkets claim!. That said it is often hard and time consuming to find local produce and that is why supermarkets work, plus bulk buying is cheaper!. If you have the time (and money) buying from source not only tastes better but is also more ethically sound!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
It tends to be a bit of a con - after all, where else does most foodstuff come from except a farm!? The only difference is that it hasn't been selected as suitable for supermarket packaging and (usually) hasn't been washed or mucked about with, so it MIGHT be a bit fresher, but otherwise it's much the same except it's been grown(you hope!) fairly locally as opposed to having been imported !Www@FoodAQ@Com
Farm produce SHOULD BE straight from the farm!. Not travelled, washed, or packed onto shelves!.
However, the term "Farm Produce" can actually mean it has come from a local supplier and still end up on supermarket shelves!.
I dont think its a con - you need to satisfy yourself that what you are buying is actually what you want!. Can you see or taste the difference between carrots from a local farm and those from a supermarket!? If not, then buy the cheapest!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Where do you think the supermarkets get it from!? When you buy from a farm it is more direct ie cutting out the likes of tesco and asda!. I know that with a lot of the suppliers to thes big company's have to wait up to 6 months before being paid where as the supermarkets take the money at the till!. Therefore they make more profit on the interest made on other peoples money!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Farm foods are usually fresh and not processed I should know I'm a Butcher and before that was a chef!. Your cutting out the middle man!. Fresh from the farm straight out of the field!.you'd be amazed what gets put in vegetables and meat to extend the life of the produce for some supermarkets!. It's fresh yes it may not last as long but thats probably because there's no presevatives in it Www@FoodAQ@Com
As it takes time to transport to markets then the shops, theoretically farm should be fresher, but who can you trust these days!. !? Veriats is a dissapearing phrase!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Farmers sometimes open 'farm shops' to sell the produce the supermarkets reject at the door rather than destroy it!. So probably not!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
