What is the point of chewing gum?!

Question: What is the point of chewing gum!?
I don't get it - it's inedible and you end up with a horrible ball of tasteless plastic-like stuff in your mouth once you've sucked the taste out of it!. You can't even blow bubbles with it!. Better to chew a toffee or suck a mint if you want flavour!.

As the shops keep on selling the stuff, I figure there are people out there who like it - so please enlighten me as I'd like to know why!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Good question--it soothes I think, it's doing something, and the flavour keeps your mouth alive-feeling!. And the sugar-free ones are good for keeping your teeth healthy after a meal (the saliva washes away the sugars and particles in the mouth)!.
Toffees and sweets rot the teeth, and have calories!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
