As long as they are over the counter and no drugs in them, you should be fine!. Not really anything in them, but a lot of sugar if they are not the sugar free kind!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Most cough drops are just candy!. They don't have any medicine in them!.
Some cough drops have ingredients like menthol in them to help you breath better!. If you are not allergic to this ingredient and you take it in small quantities, there should not be any side effects!. Halls have menthol in them!.
Some cough drops have herbs in them like echinacea!. If you are taking other drugs or herbs, it is possible for them to mix badly and for you to have side effects, sometimes even serious side effects!. Ricola cough drops have lots of different herbs in them!. Read the package and make sure you aren't allergic to any of the herbs!. I don't know if any of the herbs in the original cough drops interact badly with prescription medication, you could ask a pharmacist this!. But, Ricola does make some cough drops with echinacea in them!. If you are taking any medication, ask your pharmacist if it is safe to take echinacea at the same time!.
Some cough drops have antiseptics (antibiotics for outside of your body as opposed to inside) or anesthetics (numbing stuff)!. As long as you are not allergic, these ingredients should not cause side effects as long as you aren't finishing off a package of them a day!. Chloraseptic cough drops have an antiseptic in them!. Strepsils have an antiseptic and menthol!. Cēpacol cough drops are an example of cough drops with anesthetics!. So, you likely shouldn't take these unless you have a sore throat!. But, when you have a sore throat, they work really well and are much better than the sugar cough drops that don't really do anything!.
All in all!.!.!. I wouldn't worry about it!. A cough drop now and then isn't going to hurt you unless you are allergic to an ingredient!. Mostly all they do is numb your throat or help breathing with menthol!. They don't do much once they get into your stomach or your blood stream like oral antibiotics do!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a cough suppressant that in high doses produces psychedelic effects like visual hallucinations!. Since large doses are needed to produce these effects, nausea and vomiting are common!. also, about 7 percent of the white population has an enzyme deficiency that produces a severe reaction when dextromethorphan is taken in high doses!.
Deaths have occurred when dextromethorphan is taken in a combination cough or cold product containing an antihistamine or decongestant, or with illicit drugs like Ecstasy, or with prescribed drugs like antidepressants!.

If you are talking about one or two sometimes, yes it's fine!. Otherwise, check to see if you or another person is getting hooked on some other active ingredient!. I agree with Molly - it depends on what type they are - brands vary!. One of the old style hard candies - horehound - contains an herb and was developed as a type of cough drop and are sold as candy as well as a cough drop or sore throat soother!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
