Answers:
-chedder (everyone likes this so you cant really go wrong)
-a strong one (like stilton, gorgonzola or blue cheese)
-a soft one (like brie)
-a mild one (like wendslydale or gouda)
-and a pretty one to make it look intersting (like blue cheese or red lestciter and you can get ones with things like cranberrys in too)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I just bought 3 and a half lbs of aged cheeses made by the Monks at The Abby of Gethsemani in Bardstown, KY which is also known around here as Stinky Cheese because is better than Limberger when it comes to stink and aged flavor and is a local favorite at parties because you have to go there to get it at a decent price; about $11 a lb!.
Your people would probably be better off with the mild as it takes getting used to!.
But for your party since it is a mixed crowd and not a cheese tasting party it is usually best to stick to the standards like colby, swiss and pepper-jack in either cubes or slices!. Cheese Balls are always nice because they are spreadable!.
If you are having a wine-tasting a brick is bland enough to take away the wine taste in your palate but also tasty enough to be enjoyed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'd say that all depends on what kind of party you are having!. If it is a cocktail party or of that sort, I'd suggest something a big upscale such as Brie cheese!. It's definitely a crowd pleaser!. If there are children attending, a good cheese would be Gouda!. It still has a sophisticated but milder flavor!. also fonding cheese is a common cheese with crackers!. Both Fontina and Brie cheese are creamy so they go well with crackers!.
I would suggest you buy an assortment of crackers as well because they're just as important as the cheese!. I would suggest buttered crackers for the kids, and watercrest or wheat crackers for adults!.

Good luck with your party!Www@FoodAQ@Com

you should get at least three different cheeses of different hardness!. you can get a medium cheddar (or white cheddar) , a gouda, blue cheese, and also a brie cheese which is very soft!. try to pick ones that are not all the same color, so the blue cheese will add some color!. there are hundreds of kinds of cheese

edit: hey msjantastic I worked in a deli too for about 10 years :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

A round of Brie is always a good choice - just make sure it has time to get to room temperature before serving!. Gouda is also popular!. A nice aged cheddar is always a sure thing!. You could also get some spreadable cheeses if you wanted to - Port wine is a favorite of mine!. Pepperjack is always good!.
Stay away from swiss - while it's good on a sandwich, it's not always preferred on a cracker or served alone!.
Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com
