i come from a country where it's a normal thing to do and i spent most of my life picking mushrooms in summer and autumn!. i live in england now and really miss it!. the way the famous people patronise about mushrooming here annoys the hell out of me!. my dad used to say (jokingly) "mushrooms are the meat of the poor" but here it's a posh thing to do!.!.!.
my family always picked all different kinds because my dad educated himself very well so we had more mushrooms and better variety than most people!. what you need is a good book - even when there is an inedible (or poisonous) mushroom which looks similar to an edible one, there are always very clear signs to look for!. we never used anything else than books - follow the advice and you'll be fine!. common sense helps - if unsure, don't pick it!.
and don't forget: all mushrooms are edible, even though some only once :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes research the mushrooms in your area and see if there is a group that goes to look for them- that way you will have a guide to inform you of any poisonous look-alikes!.
i lived in Ohio when I was young and we always picked fresh morals there!. Many times there is a safe mushroom growing in your particular climate but there are 5x as many that can be deadly if eated accidently or mistakenly!.
it is definitely the best idea to do research first, and possibly to bring a book with you, or to bring home your findings and research them on the internet- making sure you account for all the details (gills, stems, etc--colors, shapes, size)Www@FoodAQ@Com

As a beginner you would be safer to join a group of mushroom pickers it takes time to learn!. Try to google it for your area!. I dont think that it would cost you much!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Look into joining your local mycological society!. There are local groups that organize mushroom hunts with experienced mushroom hunters!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
