Answers:
Gas prices are down now, but the food you see on your grocery's shelves was planted, grown, harvested, processed, and shipped while gas prices were high!. And in addition to the fuel cost, high petroleum prices also effected the cost of agricultural chemicals!.

Food costs also reflect supply and demand!. With lower supplies, and increased demand, prices are bound to be higher!.

I don't like the situation any better than you do, but you must also consider the fact that farmers and food processors must make a profit if they are to stay in business!. With the current cost of fuel, chemicals, equipment, and labor, we can not expect farmers to sell produce for the same price they sold them 40 years ago!. Processors have the same fuel costs, and increased cost of equipment and employee wages to cover as well as the increased cost of raw produce!. And in addition we have general inflation to consider!. Food prices will continue to rise as inflation rises and the cost of living increases!. You can also expect to see higher food prices as minimum wage increases!.

If you want to look for a bad guy in this scenario, look at Congress and the big food processors!. Congress is to blame for all the price supports on agricultural goods and food processors make a higher margin of profit than the farmers!. If farmers got the same profit margins as the processors, food costs would triple in most cases and quadruple in others!.
