Question: Is this chicken safe to eat!?
On monday the 17th we bought a whole cut up perdue chicken!. The problem is, my sweet husband picked it out and forgot to tell me it was clearance dated/priced for a sell by date on the 18th, therefore I didn't freeze it!. We don't plan on eating the chicken until the 22nd!. Is this safe!.!.!. are sell by dates truely just that, or are they expiration dates!? Is it true meat stays good one week after sell by dates!? also, is it safe to store the chicken in the fridge with other stuff laying on top of it!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
You could cook it today - if it smells okay - and serve it on the 22nd!. You could change your food plans, cook it today and eat it today!. If you cook it today you have 3 days to eat it!. Smell it!. If it smells bad, throw it out!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I wouldn't!. With foods other than meat you'll usually be fine, but chicken is a dangerous one!. Salmonella and food poisoning won't be fun!. You'll be able to tell that it's off because it'll reek as soon as you open the wrapper!. I'd throw it away!. Other food in the fridge should be fine though, as long is it hasn't actually touched the raw meat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Often there is a use by date and a sell by date!. There is quite a leeway on products!. It is the manufacturers way of guaranteeing safety!. It really is up to you, but personally I wouldn't use it!. If you do want it for the 22nd, then cook it now and it will keep better and longer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Your nose knows best!. If the chicken stinks even so slightly, toss it out!.
Make sure following!.
1!. It is not slimy
2!.It is not discolored
3!. It does not stink!.

If all the above conditions are met, wash your chicken thoroughly under cold water!. The bacteria grows from outside towards inside!.
Go and cook!. Make sure the temperature is at least 165 deg Fahrenheit
