That is a fabulous question that I wish I knew the answer to!.
I know Walter Diemer invented Dubble Bubble (the first bubblegum) in 1928 (It's 80th birthday was early this August) to blow big bubbles (and it's incredible how far away from that theme the bubblegum industry has gotten)!.
Stories say that he took a 5 pound bunch to a local store after he first made it and sold it out in one day!. They also say that they sold over 1!.5 million worth in it's first year!. But how much was each individual piece I don't know!.
From these beginnings, bubblegum has grown to what is likely an over 1 billion dollar industry!.
There was one interesting piece of news that happened to celebrate bubblegum's 80th birthday!. On 8-8-08 The BOMB Squad, a group of the world's greatest bubblegum bubble blowers, launched The BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, bubblegum's greatest bubble blowing contest!. If you love blowing bubbles, then this contest is for you!. Check us out!. You may become the next world champion of bubble blowing!

Well, nowadays, they cost about $0!.07!. Back then, I'd say about 10 or 20 for a penny!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
In the 1950s we got them 5 for a penny! So they must have been more like 25 for a penny in 1928!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
