For the Peanut Butter Salmonella Break Out: Is it okay to eat peanut butter already bought in the last week?!

Question: For the Peanut Butter Salmonella Break Out: Is it okay to eat peanut butter already bought in the last week!?
I babysit three kids on the daily basis, and they eat peanut butter sandwiches a good amount each week, although we don't use King Nut (I believe was the brand name), I read an article about recalling major Kellogg brands, and Keebler which I know their mom has in the house!.

They also mentioned staying away from peanut butter alone, and peanut tasted products!.

Anything I should and shouldn't give them!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
It should probably be okay!. King Nut and the other stuff implicated in the outbreak isn't sold in stores, it's distributed for industrial and institutional applications---like, they used it in other processed foods and distributed large tubs to nursing homes and such!.

Keebler has already pulled products containing suspected product from the shelves!. More will probably get pulled as they figure it out!.

Salmonella sucks, but it is rarely fatal, and they've already said they're not sure that all 6 actually died from salmonella!. In most healthy people, salmonella looks like a stomach bug!. To be avoided for sure, but still not anything to lose it over!.

The PB in your house, bought last week should have a date and a product code on it somewhere!. If you're still in doubt, there's also probably an 800 number on the back!. You could call the company to make sure and even maybe find out when it was processed!. Chances are good that is well before the outbreak anyway!. Food has a tendency to sit around it warehouses before it's shipped!.

Last, you can also ask the kids' parents if they are okay with it!. Chances are they will say yes!.

PS Call Kellogg and Keebler, ditto with the 800 number and product codes on the box!. They can tell you if those items were recalled or not!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would avoid all peanut butter products until they figure out the source and what exactly has been contaminated!. Children, the elderly, and the people with low immune systems are the most likely to get severly ill or die from salmonella!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would say with kids at risk definitely stay away from the peanut butter!. However, I say how about giving Almond Butter a try!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
