Question: Will I die if I eat a tin of chill con carne that is 5 months out of date!?
Just clocked it in back of cupboard and thought that will do for me tonight!. Looked at date best before aug 2008, was really up for it, now im not really that up for it!. Smells like chilli, looks like dog food but would have even if it was in date!. Should I risk it!?!?/Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
As long as the can wasn't rusted out or bulging, you should be fine!.!.!. especially if you heat thoroughly!.

Why put a date on the can!? Marketing! To get you to buy more!.

For example, supposedly, the one word that increased the sales of shampoo was adding "Repeat" to the instructions!.

1!. Wet hair and lather in shampoo!.
2!. Rinse!.
3!. Repeat!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

By coincidence,I too found a can of soup in the cupboard which also had a 'best before' date of August 2008!. I ate it last weekend, and I'm still here!.
Best before, sell by,use by,etc are just legal requirements or marketing ploys and generally have little to do with the actual edibility of food!.
Before manufacturers started putting expiry dates on tins, people had no idea how old the food was and would eat it whenever they felt like it!. Despite this, there was no mass poisoning of consumers,as many people would have you believe would happen if you eat food that's even 1 day past its 'best before' date!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

BEST BEFORE means that its only guarenteed 100% good until that date, since then they cant guarentee that it could be 50% good or 80% good
i think you CAN eat it, but it may not be good,

best before doesnt mean that its out of date

'sell by' and 'best before'Www@FoodAQ@Com

If it was a commercially processed can, the expiry date is probably just a precaution and the chili will be fine if you eat it as long as it tastes and smells and looks okay!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Of course not, the date is only a guideline, and a very conservative one at that!. Most items their expiration date is only half of what the real shelf-life is, and for canned goods that is years!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As Chetac said, if the can is not damaged it will probably be ok, any goodness in the way of vitamins/minerals will have decreased but that's about it!. I wouldn't eat it though, lol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

YES! its a perfectly good can of chili, the meat in its cooked right!? Then go for it! If it smells ok and its not mouldy let the good times roll :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just make sure you cook it properly, you will have no problems other than possibly ring burn!.
Ja!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If the can wasn't deformed (bulging outward or pulled inward) then it's probably good!. I'd eat it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's fine!. eat it!. But if you feel a bit sick afterwards don't sue me!. You won't die from it though!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As long as the can hasn't been punctured, or badly dented it will still be safe to eat!.!.!.!.enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

DEFINATLY!! the world is better w/o idiots like you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no, you won't die!.
it's in a CAN, you'll be fine!. it just won't be as fresh!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yeah thats why they make an exparation dateWww@FoodAQ@Com

Lol, yup and video tape and put it on youtube for all to see!. lol :DWww@FoodAQ@Com

i would eat it !.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

dont eat it u will explode and dieWww@FoodAQ@Com

I vote this one of the most stupid questions I have seen,
typing this question!.!.!.what a waste of your timeWww@FoodAQ@Com
