Does peppering hanging meat do more than ward-off flies?!

Question: Does peppering hanging meat do more than ward-off flies!?
My friend always dusts his hanging quarry with black pepper to keep the flies away!. Does the pepper also slow down or prevent bacterial or fungal growth!? Besides salt and pepper, what are some other good "dustings" to put on your hanging game to prevent unwanted infestations!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
