What's the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?!

Question: What's the difference between a cupcake and a muffin!?
I'm French, so English isn't my mother tongue and after 10 years living in Southern California, I'm still unclear what the difference is between a cupcake and a muffin!. Every time I call one of those two "a muffin", I get corrected by someone who says "Oh, that's not a muffin!. It's a cupcake!" The difference in their appearance isn't relevant to me!. They look pretty much the same!. Why are there two different words in the English language to describe almost the same concept!? Does anyone have a good explanation!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
The difference is actually in when you eat this 'pastry' item, and also in what is in it!. A 'muffin' usually has some 'healthy food' in it, and it NEVER has any 'frosting' !.!.!. although many do have a 'sweet crumb topping' !.!.!. and a muffin is made by 'stirring gently' only until moistened!. A 'cupcake' is basically made from 'cake batter' but is cooked in a 'muffin tin' !.!.!. and these usually come with frosting on them, are sweeter and have little or no 'healthy food' beyond the eggs and milk!. A cupcake is 'smoother in texture' and is eaten as a 'sweet' or dessert, while a muffin can be served as a 'whole meal,' especially at breakfast!. A muffin can taste good with butter or margarine added, a cupcake with anything but fruit or frosting is 'nasty!.'Www@FoodAQ@Com

well, a cupcake is generally more cakelike in texture (more fluffy) and usually has frosting or icing on it!. a muffin is more "sturdy", it's not as fluffy, it's more breadlike (sort of) and it usually isn't as sweet as cupcakes (although sometimes it can be) and doesn't come with frosting!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A cupcake is a small cake!. A muffin is a quickbread!. The difference is mainly in how they are made, but since they are cooked in the same pan they will look the same!. A cake is made by the creaming method and a muffin is made by the muffin method!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The way you make them

A cup cake is made like a tradional cake where you cream the butter and sugar together, add the eggs, milk and flour and other flavourings

A muffin is made by mixing the dry ingredients together - flour, sugar, baking powder etc and mixing the wet ingredients together - melted butter, milk etc then combining the two together without overworking the mixing!.

the texture of the finished product will be differentWww@FoodAQ@Com

a muffin is usually hearty and has fruit or chocolate chips and they are usually yellowish, unless it's a chocolate muffin!. muffins that you buy are generally larger than cupcakes!. cupcakes are smaller and smoother, they don't usually have any fruit or additional ingredients!. they are sweeter than a muffin and usually have frosting or some type of decoration!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Muffins are more of "bread" in a "cup" and cupcakes are "cakes" in a cup!.
