It's a food additive that is used to make foods more savory and appealing to the taste!. It's derived and isolated from the amino acid "glutamate"!. It's often found in chips and canned soups, but is in MANY other processed/prepared foods of the savory type!.
It's bad for you because it's a neurotoxin which means it kills brain cells by over exciting them!. It's also harmful because although it's not sweet, it causes a huge insulin response, which causes you to gain weight from it!. MSG, also known as monosodium glutamate (and lesser known as hydrolyzed protein) is a preservative that also enhances the flavour of foods!. It itself is tasteless, and is found in many packaged foods, not only Chinese take-out from what you might be lead to believe!.
The FDA has made claims that it is safe!. I've heard and read some people saying that it caused major headaches, it's a neurotoxin and can worsen asthma!. It's really up to you what you want to make up from it!. It should also be mentioned that certain people are just sensitive to certain foods, additives, preservatives, etc!.
If you really want to be careful, you should become an avid label-reader!. Any packaged food you intend to buy!.!.!. read the ingredients!. You'll be surprised how often it shows up!. Even in things like canned soup, flavoured instant rice, flavoured chips, all sorts of things!.
