This is a question I used to wonder myself!. I've learned that there is a difference!. An expiration date is when the food will likely no longer be suitable for consumption!.
A sell by date is exactly what it says!. This date indicates the latest a supplier can safely sell a food product!. After this date, food has a seven day shelf life before expiring!. If you look closely, a few food companies that use sell by dates will indicate on the packaging to consume within seven days of the sell by date!.
I hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The sell by date is when the stores want to have the stock sold by, and is arbitory, but there are guidelines!.
Expiration date is the date when it will be still in optimum condition!.
You can still eat products past those dates, but it is up to you to decide!. They do not suddenly 'go off' overnight!.
Eggs can be stored for weeks after the date on the container, as will most tinned, jarred, frozen and packet foods!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

sell by date: it's still fine to eat, it's just for stores so they know by when stuff needs to be sold
expiration date: food expires on this date, depending on the food item you can still eat it afterwards as long as it still smells, looks and tastes Ok (like pasta and rice, sometimes yogurt, milk etc!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Whatever they want to call it for me they are the same!. Chips like cheetos and sodas can be eaten even a few months after the guaranteed freshness date and taste the same!. I think some companies are putting short expiry date because they want to sell their product quick!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
just smell your foods and make sure there's no mold!.

Shelf life is different from expiration date; the former relates to food quality, the latter to food safety!.
