Is fish purchased in a supermarket safe? Would you rather buy it from a small fish monger?!
What's your opinions on fish from a very large market (Stop & Shop, Shaw's)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Jabber, always buy fish from a fish monger when possible!. it will be fresher and taste better!. when you go to the grocer to buy fish check to see if it is displayed properly!. Fresh fish should be displayed on a bed of ice!. remember to check these things before buying: look at the fishes eyes, they should be clear not cloudy and bright looking if the fish is fresh!. ask the sales person when the fish was brought in and ask about the freshness!. (don't be afraid to ask these questions) feel the body of the fish, it should feel smooth and clean, not at all slimy!. slime indicates fish that has been sitting around and not properly stored!. and check the smell of the fish!. fresh fish will not smell "fishy" it should smell clean!. look at the gills of the fish the fresher the fish the redder the gills!. if the gills are grayish the fish is not at all fresh!. I like to ask them if they know when the fish was swimming last! sometimes they know!. hope this helps, chef paulWww@FoodAQ@Com

fish from supermarkets have to be safe or they wouldnt be able to resale it!. Most of the fish there is frozen before hand!. The fish from a monger are normally very very fresh and normally never frozen!. Both are good its just weather you prefer fresh versus not as fresh!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I now spend most my time in west Texas, I was in Alaska since 1989!. Know a little about fish!. My buddy down here bought some halibut for us to cook at work!. He got it from a local Mexican grocery store!. It was rotten, I had him smell it because I almost puked! He gave it to the birds!. If it smells fishy, DONT EAT IT-DONT BUY IT! Fresh fish doesn't smell bad!. Always remember that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
