Why does Cottage Cheese stay fresher(3 to 4 times longer) when you store it upside down in the fridge?!

This old Hungarian myth was passed down to me from my Great Grand Parents. And you know what? It works!!

>I bet it has to do with the air in the heaspace above the cottage cheese. I noticed that when I use horseradish, and the jar gets old, I have to dig down and maybe get an inch out of the jar, before the horseradish gets hot. So maybe it has to do with the headspace and air that is degrading the food. Turned upside down, you deprive the food of degradative oxygen.

I've never heard of this before, but I would assume that it has something to do with the fact that storing it upside down causes the cheese to form an seal around the lid and doesn't let air into the package. I'm just guessing though.

It's a guess
