Unfortunately, the orange peel has all the insecticides on it and has all those pores to keep them in even if you wash it. Organic oranges, on the other hand, have perfectly edible peels. They're really good parboiled in sugar syrup and then coated in dark chocolate.
They are edible and orange zest is a great way to flavour cakes. Zest is just the part of the skin that contains the essential oils.
If you sat down peeled an orange and then ate all the peelings then it might make you sick but nothing more than just an upset stomach. You don't want to eat much pith, the white stuff.
Oh yes they are definitely edible. Some recipes call for "orange zest" which is the grated skin of the orange. Although possibly bitter on their own they can add real zing to recipes when paired with other ingredients like sugar. For example, sweet orange yeast rolls.
