What does straining the noodles do?!

Question: What does straining the noodles do?
My friend gave me some asian noodles to try out. After i poured the boiling hot water onto the noodles and the noodles separated, my friend told me to strain the noodles. I asked him why we should do it but he doesn't know and that it's completely optional. I did it anyway just because that's how he eats it.
Anyway, what does straining the noodles do?

Answers:

If they were soba noodles you strain and rinse them to remove the excess starch so that the noodles don't stick together.

Okay noodles are supposed to be had minus that water you boil it in. You get rid of all that water which actually is quite starchy. Only if your having some flavoured soupy noodles you aren't suppose to strain them.
