If it's a simple meatless marinara, you can choose something lighter and if it's heavier with meat, a heavier wine. If the sauce has Italian sausage you can even do a zinfandel or primitivo (Italian zinfandel.)
I like chianti, or something like a Montelpulciano d'Abruzzo. Citra makes one that's very affordable and it's not bad for an everyday sort of wine.
Ruffino makes a nice chianti... and there are some good Italian red table wines (they may just say "Rosso" on the label)
You can also do a merlot or cab sauv. I've also had malbec and shiraz and tempranillo that were all really nice with pasta and red sauce.
Lambrusco if you're strapped for cash. $5 a bottle.
Chianti if you have more cash. $20 a bottle. =)

Great Wall red wine

Valpolicella Ripasso
full bodied enough to not be overpowered by the sauce, and cheaper than an Amarone
Personal experience
I would use tempranillo, spanish bt adds spice!
