These are all good answers here. I also hear that you can really eat anything but do portion control. Too much sugar and white breads, pasta, etc are not good, you should eat whole grains (make sure you look at the ingredients, it should say whole wheat or other grains and not enriched).

You really have to make a lifestyle change altogether so you want to change your eating habits to what you will want to eat for the rest of your life. Add exercise as well.

Here is a "stream of consciousness" list of things I have found useful over the years when I wanted to drop a few pounds:

I find that if I fill up on protein, I feel full longer. Buy sliced turkey or chicken breast and make "roll-ups" with a thin slice of cheese and cucumber (for some crunch). Or wrap it in a lettuce leaf. (Avoid bread, pasta, and sugary cereals). They'll slice cheese thin at the deli counter of a supermarket if you ask. Fish is high in protein, can be cooked in a few minutes in a pan or under the broiler, and is low in fat. Use fat-free milk exclusively. Buy bags of frozen vegetables and prepare the whole bag at once. Keep it available in the fridge. This way you only have to warm up a serving for a minute or two in the microwave when you crave something to eat. Get a big variety, including lima beans, squash, spinach, string beans, and so on. Remember that beans are high in protein, too. Find the lowest-calorie sweet that you can, and keep a big bag of it handy. I found a delicious 25-calorie cookie that comes in a big bag. Just one satisfies my sweet tooth. Fill up between meals on decaf tea or coffee. Adding cinnamon (or a cinnamon stick!) to my coffee can "convince" me that it's a dessert! Snack on a cup of plain Cheerios when you want something crunchy. Keep fresh fruit or canned fruit in juice available for instant munching. Try to rid your pantry and fridge of anything that can sabotage your diet until you've reached your goal. Good luck!

It really depends on how much weight you want to lose. I am just trying to lose a little bit, so I eat cucumbers, and other vegetables. Grilled chicken, tuna, and salmon. 100% whole grain bread. Milk, juice, and a lot of water. hard-boiled egg whites, and cheese. I don't know if this works for everybody.
